Mindful Holiday Giving

Having trouble finding the perfect item for someone special? Need a thoughtful hostess gift? Looking for a way to share cheer at the office without exchanging one more round of Santa mugs and reindeer ornaments?

Consider giving the gift of contribution. Choose a worthy organization your Aunt Rose has supported in the past, or a Food Pantry if you need a hostess gift, or choose a local organization that the whole office can pitch in to support.

This year, I’m giving to Global Resource Alliance in support of their Solar Cooker program in Tanzania. Efficient and inexpensive cooking protects families from the high costs of fuel, the environment from the impact of over-harvesting of wood and children from the devastating diseases carried by untreated water.

Whose life will you change?

My best giving so far this season is bringing blankets and sleeping bags to the new homeless shelter in Ventura. They are so appreciative, and they know that these items will be used immediately. I’ve started picking them up at yard sales and thrift shops, and dropping them off at Horizon Church. It is so close to the mall, and a much better choice of direction! Thanks for asking…

The employees at the Spa where I am a massage therapist decided to skip giving each other mini-stockings full of chocolate and the like this year, and instead collect money to donate. We’ll be splitting our funds between Save the Children and Heifer International.

Vicki, Your idea reminds me of the year I had a big holiday party and invited each guest to bring a donation for the homeless shelter. They always need toiletries, socks, etc. It was so great when I took several large boxes to the shelter. I always feel that “Friends that give together have fun together!”
